About Al Zaeem Al Azhari University
Al Zaeem Al Azhari University in Sudan was founded in the early 1990s and named in honor of Sudan’s first president, Ismail Al Azhari, a prominent figure in the country’s national movement. The idea for its establishment began with a presidential decree in 1990 to rehabilitate Al Azhari Intermediate School for Girls. However, during an official meeting, the well-known nationalist Bashir Al Nafidi proposed the creation of a national university named after Al Zaeem Al Azhari. The proposal was unanimously accepted and received broad political and public support.
Following this, Presidential Decree No. (485-1990) was issued to establish the university as a national academic institution, and its foundation stone was laid during the Independence Day celebrations in 1991. The university initially opened with five major faculties: Medicine, Engineering, Education, Agriculture, and Political Science & Strategic Studies. In 1993, in response to developments in the academic landscape, Presidential Decree No. (22-1993) transformed the university from a private institution into a public university under the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
Since then, the university has experienced rapid growth, expanding to seventeen faculties that cover a wide range of disciplines meeting both societal needs and global academic standards. Al Zaeem Al Azhari University has graduated thousands of students who have gone on to hold prominent professional and academic positions in Sudan and abroad, consolidating its status as one of the leading educational institutions in the region.
